Grok 4.5 supports configurable reasoning effort and tools for web search, X search, code execution, and function calling. It is most interesting when current information is a first-class requirement rather than a separate retrieval service bolted onto the model.

Long context and caching
Standard rates apply below the long-context threshold. Once a prompt reaches 200,000 tokens, xAI lists higher input, cached input, and output rates for Grok 4.5. The provider recommends a stable prompt cache key for conversations so related requests are more likely to reach the same cache-aware server.
If a workflow repeatedly carries a large history, compare compaction and retrieval with simply resending it. Track cache hits rather than assuming a repeated prefix was discounted.
How to evaluate search-enabled answers
Score source relevance, source authority, date, claim support, and whether the answer distinguishes retrieved fact from model inference. Include tests where recent sources disagree or where a viral claim has no primary evidence.
